“That won’t work,” a deep, stoic voice called out, making us jump. It was unfamiliar, and I realized in that moment how dumb we were for not watching our surroundings better. We’d been working for days, trying to get these damn masks off, but the tools were limited.

Before I could react, Wade sat up and blocked me with his body. He looked around frantically before holding up a giant metal rod as a makeshift weapon, ready to defend us.

‘Well, fancy meeting you here,’ Wade said, like he was actually talking to the intruder.

‘Yes, because you know so much about a mask you’ve likely never seen,’ I snarked right along with him. The guy’s comment about my current attempt at unlocking our masks rubbed me the wrong way. We hadn’t expected it to take this long, but I hadn’t found a proper tool small enough to activate the release mechanism.

‘I’m Wade… and you are?’ Wade waved his hand to get him to answer his mental question.

“I’m Akihiro,” he replied as if he could hear us, his lip curling up in a sneer for a moment as he leaned slightly to the side, clearly trying to see around Wade. I leaned over to get a better view, meeting his dark stare. He seemed to be waiting for a reaction, and it felt like one of those situations where someone trying to be famous was like, ‘oh… you haven’t heard of me?’.

‘Well, we’re good in here, Akihiro, but thanks,’ Wade said smoothly, not relaxing his tense stance even though his tone still came off as joking through our comm. Serious and intense Wade was definitely a side I hadn’t seen before. It’s kind of hot.

“You clearly don’t know what you’re doing. It’s a good thing Merrick told me you were down here,” he said in a haughty tone, walking around the perimeter of the room, his eyes flickering back and forth between us and the tools that were strewn about. After a few minutes, he reached up to one of the shelves and pulled down a small case I hadn’t noticed during our first search. Mainly because I wasn’t really tall enough to reach that shelf, let alone see what was on it, and Wade wasn’t much help with searching. There was a reason I was the one in the junkyard looking for a key in a junk stack. “Here.”

Wade and I nodded in thanks but didn’t move toward the offered box. Part of me was afraid he’d be calling me Gwendalyn and trying to come closer, but he almost seemed mocking in his observation of us. Whoever this Gwen was, she must have fucked up or fucked them up. After one last judgmental, scathing look, he walked over to the far wall and leaned against it.

‘Why… why are they all so creepy?’ I groaned, reaching around Wade for the box Akihiro had placed on a nearby table and flipping it open. The tools were tiny and perfect for the mask, clearly intended for delicate work of some kind.
